I just read an article from Baptist News Global pushing why Christians should support abortion—and it was absolutely disturbing. The author actually claimed, “Reproductive justice provides a path for ensuring people’s sexual and reproductive health and needs are met as part of attending to the whole person [and] abortion access is a part of reproductive justice...” Excuse me, what?! Since when did the church’s mission become "ensuring people's sexual health" and promoting abortion access? I seriously feel like I’ve stepped into the Twilight Zone!

It’s a recurring argument. It is easily shot down but keeps coming back. People want their sin, it’s that simple and abortion allows them to be sexually promiscuous. If it lets them sleep around, damn the children.

It is sad but true.

Much of the "church" is apostate.

Revelation chapter 2 and 3 are the most sobering.

Even more terrifying is Hebrews chapter 10😱

"Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins.

27 There is only the terrible expectation of God’s judgment and the raging fire that will consume his enemies.

28 For anyone who refused to obey the law of Moses was put to death without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.

29 Just think how much worse the punishment will be for those who have trampled on the Son of God, and have treated the blood of the covenant, which made us holy, as if it were common and unholy, and have insulted and disdained the Holy Spirit who brings God’s mercy to us.

30 For we know the one who said, “I will take revenge. I will pay them back.” He also said, “The LORD will judge his own people.”

31 It is a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Supporters of murder/abortion are enraging the Holy Spirit 😱

There will be nothing but the terrible expectation of His judgement

This is so well-documented, and well-said! Children are a Joy, and should be treated as such, regardless of circumstance. That having been said, some woman/teenagers need guidance in order to make the right choice. Thanks for posting. It was a warning said in love and logic!

Amen. So many young women are deceived by the authority figures in their lives 😢

Christ’s kingdom is not of this world, and God does not coerce us into righteousness. The question of whether Christians are “pro choice” regarding the American government (Ie not wanting to force pregnant non-Christian women to give birth, just as God does not force or coerce us to do the right thing) is/should be/at the very least, can be —extremely different than an individual Christian’s convictions about abortion.

I believe all Christians can agree that Kingdom values don’t actually include abortion. However-Where Christians may honestly disagree is the means that any given country may take to accomplish the desired end of less abortions.

I for one want to see more and more American women’s hearts on fire for the Lord and making the great sacrifice of birth out of their free will- rather than more American women remaining non-believers, even more angry at a God they don’t know, because of the overlap of church and state that forced them into sacrifice.

Finally. The Church fathers are holy, but God’s law is even more holy. Look at Exodus 21. There was a fine for the murder of an unborn child—but a steeper, physical, penalty for bodily harm to the woman. I don’t think God likes fetuses dying—but His law clearly implemented a priority of value. Women’s bodily well-being was more highly valued than even the life of their fetuses. This is not a popular passage to reference today because I think it makes us uncomfortable to realize.

Ultimately-Christ gave Himself for us- the Father did not force him to the cross. When we force women to their personal crosses, I believe we undercut the Christian message.

Thank you for reading.

Patricia already handled the issue of misinterpretation of Exodus 21, so I won't deal with that.

I think you misunderstand the role of government. Scripture is clear that government is a sword to punish those who do wrong. One hallmark of a just government is the punishment of murder. Abortion is murder. Therefore, a just government will punish murder.

Let's say you are more libertarian (I am not). The libertarian might say government should only get involved when I am infringing on someone else's rights. Abortion infringes on the unborn's right to life.

Abortion is evil. It must be illegal.

Let's take what you say here and apply it in other instances, "When we force women to their personal crosses, I believe we undercut the Christian message."

How about, "When we force murders not to murder and take their personal crosses, I believe we undercut the Christian message."

Or how about, "When we force slaveowners not to own slaves and take their personal crosses, I believe we undercut the Christian message."

Or how about, "When we force Nazis not to genocide and take their personal crosses, I believe we undercut the Christian message."

Thanks and no, I’m not particularly libertarian. I think the disagreement is about whether abortion is actually “murder” that is comparable to any other kind of murder. Copy/pasting a portion of my reply to Patricia this morning:

I just don’t believe God sees this as murder in an equivalent sense to the murder of the born—because there is no other form of life that is dependent on the use of another person’s body. To me it feels more like ‘withdrawal of life support’ (because baby cannot live outside mother) which I believe absolutely goes against the heart of God if for selfish reasons but for secular people is it actually “murder”? Especially at an early stage? I’m just not convinced enough that I would want to vote to outlaw it for everyone. ( although of course if I were teaching Christian women on a personal level, my teaching would certainly be to not abort!)

Joshua Rodriguez's avatar

Then you are stepping outside of the bounds of how Christians from the beginning of the Church have consensually interpreted Scripture on abortion. That is literally the definition of heresy. That’s partially the purpose of this article, to show that there is consensus on this matter. I only covered patristic quotes, but the Medievals, later Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestants all hold to the same. It is anti-Christian to not to recognize abortion as murder and seek to end it. You have been affected by the philosophy of your times and have forgotten the teachings of Scripture and the Church.

Rebecca's avatar

Possibly.

Interestingly enough I actually agree with the Patristics quotes in your article. If I had an abortion, I would feel I had murdered before God.

And yet. . . I suppose what I believe is that from a civil society level there are different types of murder perhaps. I believe some are answerable to the society at large because the person poses a risk. . .and some types are answerable only to God’s law.

Maybe that makes me a heretic.

I mean, I am already a heretic by Catholic definition (I’m Wesleyan) so I can’t deny too hard there!

Rebecca's avatar

PS. I also think MANY things are evil that our government does not outlaw. In Rebecca’s ideal society, there would be no porn, no strip clubs, no adultery, no economic injustice, no drunkenness, no cigarettes, no extramarital sex-and yes- no abortion.

I just don’t think my vote as an American citizen is the best way to effect that vision. Ancient Israel was a theocracy, but we aren’t. I think our votes are neutral as regards the human heart (I have considered not voting actually) but our prayers are immensely powerful. Thank you for the dialogue!

Dear Rebecca,

I am sure you are a kind and wonderful person 😇

Please do not confuse what I write here as being an attack upon you. You are a wonderful person made in the image of God👍✝

Ideas, however, are a different matter. Anytime ideas are presented, we must shine the light of Scripture on the idea and find out if is good or evil.

So, what does the bible say about the idea you presented?

😁 Ecclesiastes 10:13 says "Because fools base their thoughts on foolish premises, their conclusions will be wicked madness."

Any argument that results in the murder of a baby is wicked madness 😱

We can never make a false equivalency that supports communist/democrat murder of the unborn.

The woman is a life.

The baby is also a life.

This is not a zero sum game. Murder is murder.

Is there anyone that thinks it is alright for women to do meth and get drunk when they are pregnant? No of course not.

- Why? Because it harms the baby. The tiny HUMAN that will have a life of brain damage from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and be crippled due to the mother being selfish.

- Clearly I think we can all agree death for the baby is even worse for the baby than the possibility of the baby being harmed by meth or alcohol!

Killing a baby simply adds trauma to the woman☹

It is the most horrific injustice to lie to women and tell them "all their problems will go away" if they simply murder their baby😢

Many women have committed suicide after killing their baby because they could not deal with the guilt. Many women have an entire life of emotional problems after killing their baby. My wife was adopted and I would not have my precious girl if her mom had murdered her.

There are countless stories of women who were raped and kept the baby and the baby changed their life for the better!

Suggesting that God's expectation of a parent to raise and care for their child is "forcing a woman to bear a cross" is one of the most selfish statements democrats/communists have ever made. This argument of course is the fruit of the poisonous tree. When people reject God, they choose to make their entire lives on this world about fulfilling all their most selfish and wicked ideas for their own lust and pleasure - instead of thanking the Creator for creating them - and Romans 1 tells us those people are going to end up in hell😱 I 💥People that love you will tell you this because God cares about you. God also warns us in Romans 1 that the only thing worse than doing evil is influencing others to do evil.

💥If people read your ideas and then choose to do evil because of your influence - you are extremely dangerous territory 😱

The Bible tells us that in the last days, People will call good evil - and evil good 😮 Be on guard against deception! 😮 The other stunning thing is when a reporter asked people if they believed in "your body your choice" THEY ALL SAID YES. When the reporter then asked them What about the vaccine? They ALL SAID "WELL THATS DIFFERENT". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vX1VoLmG7hc

- Turns out this conversation is all about selfishness - it has nothing to do with God or good. Even if a person doesn't care about killing babies, and doesn't care about breaking the commandments of God, and doesn't care of their mental health, just the financial reality of abortion a reason to be opposed to abortion.

Here is a video I did explaining that abortion caused the 2008 financial crisis.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm960JDbj2k

Even murderous communist China has ended their abortion policies because their economy is about to collapse due to them murdering 300-400 million babies

So may God richly bless you, and I hope that these truths were helpful 🙏

I would like to share some thoughts about Exodus 21:22-25. “When men get in a fight and hit a pregnant woman so that her children are born prematurely but there is no injury, the one who hit her must be fined as the woman’s husband demands from him, and he must pay according to judicial assessment. If there is an injury, then you must give life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, bruise for bruise, wound for wound.” This involves fighting between men and in the altercation, a woman’s child is born prematurely but there is no injury, the one who struck her must be fined. If there is an injury to the mother or child then the penalty is commensurate with the crime (life for life, eye for eye, etc). This is not addressing a deliberate taking of the baby’s life. Even if, as you say, that a stiffer penalty was required for injury to the mother (my understanding however, is if there is injury to the mother or child, including death), God cared about the life in the womb.

If Christians care about the life in the womb, believing it is murder to deliberately end that life, then it is murder to the Christian whether the mother is a Christian or not a Christian. Should we not defend all life in the womb since God cares for all?

I don’t believe anyone should be forced to adhere to my religious belief that Jesus died for our sin and is the way to heaven/eternal life. Jesus wants people to come to Him willingly. However, in the case of murder, government has the duty to apply the law for punishment to Christians and non-Christians. Murder is against the law because Christians and nonchristian believe it should be. If we are a Christian who believes that a pregnant woman has a “life” in the womb and it is murder to end that life deliberately, why would we look upon that taking of life (murder) as forcing our belief on someone if we outlaw it, and not so when taking the life of someone already born?

Please believe me, I am not responding to your comment just for the sake of argument, but truly wish to give thoughts to consider in our desire to walk a path that is obedient and honoring to God.

Rebecca's avatar

I appreciate your thoughts and can tell that you are truly interested in dialogue, I appreciate it!

So. . .thanks for bringing that NIV translation to my attention! I usually use RSV or NRSV in which it is translated ‘miscarriage’ not ‘come forth prematurely!’ Very interesting huh?

I did some digging and seems like there is abundant controversy around what the Hebrew term means, and age old debates in Jewish and Christian circles around what this means regarding the unborn.

I certainly agree with you that if this passage refers to premature birth, it lends a different interpretation to God’s view of the fetus!

So thank you for offering that for my consideration.

However I will say I was already pretty convinced that God does not want us killing our fetuses on purpose. . .truly the biggest question for me is whether the government can/should force a woman to continue to sacrifice her body for her fetus’ body.

I just don’t believe God sees this as murder in an equivalent sense to the murder of the born—because there is no other form of life that is dependent on the use of another person’s body. To me it feels more like ‘withdrawal of life support’ (because baby cannot live outside mother) which I believe absolutely goes against the heart of God but for secular people is it “murder”? Especially at an early stage? I’m just not convinced enough that I would want to vote to outlaw it for everyone. ( although of course if I were teaching Christian women on a personal level, my teaching would certainly be to not abort!)

Thanks for the dialogue, I will certainly be reflecting and praying further. Blessings to you!

It seems we have a slight difference of opinion as regards to what does or does not qualify as murder. Even if abortion was the removal of life support, it is a deliberate decision to do so in order to end the life of the baby (and not necessarily because the treatment for any condition is not expected to be successful or there are no brain waves noted on testing). To me, that is still murder. Yes, God designed the female to carry and nourish and protect the baby until birth. It is seen throughout nature in most cases. But that baby is a separate and distinct being all the same. The baby has a separate DNA from the mother.

I also consider that WE THE PEOPLE are the ones responsible for the laws we create as we are a republic who choose representatives to carry out the business of our government. We change them when they do not meet expectations in their job. I then, take seriously who I elect as I want my decisions for government, as I do every area of my life, to align with Scripture and honor God (And yes, I would love to have a person in office who feels the same way and acts the same way to honor God, but I have learned that they are all imperfect like me. So I choose between policies that they choose to implement ). I can tell that for yourself, personally, you care about being obedient to Scripture and God.

We Christians in America have a great responsibility when it comes to our effect on government in this country. More so than those countries which have a more totalitarian or BIG government control.

Rebecca's avatar

Thank you for your thoughtful words! Yes I think we have a very challenging task as citizens of a republic- it’s a great privilege but also as you note, a great responsibility.

Thanks for giving me some points to reflect on further.

Pro-Birth, Anti-Life: The GOP's Child Welfare Hypocrisy

Presuming much, are we? Who said I was GOP? I’m not a big fan of them either. I’m a Christian. We feed the hungry. We care for the fatherless. Compare historically Christian nations to non-Christian ones. Compare charity giving between Christians and non-Christians. Walk into most churches and ask for help. You’ll see the hands and feet of Jesus in action. We care for life from its inception to its termination because Christ compels us.
