Read John Stricklands 4 volumes on the history of church and culture from Paradisiacal Christianity of the first millennium to the present age of nihilism? The style he uses is somewhat redundant but overall brilliant. Hard slogging because he encompasses how philosophical changes affected religion, art, music, architecture and was politics. Everyone should be familiar with the content.
